| 1929-1933 | Attends Georgia Tech. |
| 1932-33 | Serves as Georgia Tech student body president. |
| 1933 | Graduates from Georgia Tech with a B.S. in Commerce with honors. |
| 1933 | Joins the Ivan Allen Company, a firm his father founded in 1900. |
| 1936 | Marries Louise Richardson, they have 3 sons: Ivan III, Inman, and Beaumont. |
| 1942-45 | U.S. Army, Fourth Service Command. |
| 1945-46 | Serves as executive secretary for Georgia Governor Ellis Arnall. |
| 1945-47 | Serves as President of Atlanta Area Council Boy Scouts of America. |
| March 1, 1946 | Becomes president of the Ivan Allen Company, when his father retires. He holds that position until 1970. |
| 1947 | Becomes president of the Atlanta Community Chest (predecessor to the United Way). |
| 1953 | Elected president of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association for one-year term. |
| 1958 | Receives Alumni Distinguished Service Award from Georgia Tech. |
| 1961 | President of Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. |
| 1961 | Serves as President of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. |
| 1961 | Defeats Lester Maddox in mayoral primary. |
| 1962 | Inaugurated mayor of Atlanta. |
| 1962 | Eliminates restrictions on duties of black policemen. |
| July 1963 | At the request of President Kennedy, testifies before Congress in support of Civil Rights Act that would eliminate discrimination in public accommodations. |
| 1963 | Appoints bi-racial commission to examine racial situation in Atlanta and recommend action. |
| 1963 | Atlanta swimming pools and parks desegregated. |
| 1964 | Convinces 14 downtown hotels to desegregate. |
| 1965 | Re-elected to second term as mayor. |
| 1965 | Atlanta-Fulton County stadium opens. |
| 1966 | Tours riot-torn Summerhill community in effort to restore calm. |
| 1966 | Creates Community Relations Commission. |
| 1966 | Braves and Falcons move to Atlanta and new stadium. |
| 1967 | Ivan Allen Jr. oversees the building of the Atlanta Civic Center. |
| 1968 | Ivan Allen Jr. oversees the building of the Memorial Arts Center. |
| 1970-1995 | Ivan Allen Jr. serves as chairman of the board of the Ivan Allen Company. |
| 1974 | Ivan Allen Jr. is awarded the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation Award for achievement in urban affairs. |
| 1981 | Ivan Allen Jr. is awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Nonviolent Peace Prize for unrelenting commitment to nonviolent social change. |
| 1985 | Receives the Georgia Tech Exceptional Achievement Award. |
| 1990 | Georgia Tech College of Liberal Arts is renamed the Ivan Allen College. |
| 1995 | Ivan Allen Jr. receives the Shining Light Award from Atlanta Gas Light and WSB Radio for inspiring others through community service. |
| 1996 | Receives honorary doctorate of Public Service Degree from Georgia Tech. |
| 1995-2003 | Ivan Allen serves as chairman emeritus of the Ivan Allen Company. |
| 1999 | Ivan Allen Jr. receives the Carter/Mathis Award. |
| July 2, 2003 | Ivan Allen Jr. dies. |
