Nicole Johnston

"The best part of the Ivan Allen Civic Responsibility Contest was the opportunity I had to explore the ideas that the Ivan Allen College stands for, as well as its remarkable history. Accepting this award was truly an honor and a moment that I will always remember. I was excited to have the chance to meet future professors and fellow students, and to learn more about the topics I researched for the essay and the guest speaker, Dr. Gayle [recipient of the 2009 Ivan Allen Jr. Award for Progress and Service]."

Nicole is from Atlanta and graduated from Northview High School in Duluth, Georgia in spring 2009. She enters Georgia Tech in fall 2009 and plans to major in International Affairs and pursue the International Plan. Her sister presently attends Georgia Tech.

"Through the Ivan Allen Civic Responsibility Essay Contest I was not only able to meet some of my future professors and students, but also learn about the history of the Institution that I had chosen to attend as well as the rich background of Atlanta. Additionally, through researching and writing my essay I discovered things about my subject and myself that were priceless lessons."

2007 Essay Contest Winner
Travis Horsley

"It was an honor to accept the IAC Essay Contest scholarship. I explored the legacy of Congressman John Lewis, a true Georgia hero! His convictions about the socioeconomic disparities that exist in our nation helped mold my studies at Tech to this date."

From Hampton, Georgia, Travis is a second year student in the Ivan Allen College. He is pursuing joint majors in Public Policy and International Affairs. "Tech allows me to focus on everything in an intertwined fashion - whether it be going to class, working at Georgia Tech Research Institute, an internship at the state capitol, working as a Peer Leader (RA) in the Freshmen Experience residence halls, or serving my fellow students on Student Government - everything builds on each other... I love it!"

WAYNE CLOUGH, FORMER TECH PRESIDENT

"Ivan Allen Jr. is a legend in Atlanta and for Georgia Tech. He was a national leader during the crucible of the development during the Civil Rights movement, and he has always been a loyal and dedicated Georgia Tech Alumnus."
