Posted June 20, 2017

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved the creation of the Julius C. “Bud” Shaw Professorship in Sports, Society, and Technology. The board also approved the appointment of Johnny Smith, assistant professor in the School of History and Sociology, as the inaugural holder of the Shaw Professorship.

This named professorship, made possible through the generous support of the late Bud Shaw and his sons Julius and Lee, provides support for research and for a variety of activities connected with the undergraduate minor in Sports, Society, and Technology, including expanded internship opportunities.

Smith's research focuses on the history of sports and American culture and is the author of two award-winning books  Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship Between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X (written with Randy Roberts) and The Sons of Westwood: John Wooden, UCLA, and the Dynasty That Changed College Basketball.
