CommLab Staff Receive Tutor of the Year Awards from Southeastern Writing Center Association

Posted January 16, 2019

Leah Misemer and Keely Mruk, two staff members from the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Naugle Communication Center (CommLab), recently received tutor of the year awards from the Southeastern Writing Center Association (SWCA).

Misemer, a postdoctorate fellow and CommLab’s assistant director, and Mruk, an undergraduate student in the School of History and Sociology and Scheller College of Business, won professional tutor of the year and undergraduate peer tutor of the year, respectively.

Both awards are competitive as winners are chosen from a pool of applicants from 11 states and territories within the SWCA’s region.

“SWCA is a large and robust organization of writing and communication centers, with some of the strongest academic centers in the field,” CommLab Executive Director Karen Head says. “Having twice chaired the awards committee in past years, I can say that the undergraduate award is the most competitive—usually with a pool of 25-30 extremely talented nominees... The professional tutor award also demands exceptional achievement both in tutoring as well as in writing center program development and implementation.”

At the SWCA conference, Misemer and Mruk will also be presenting their research, entitled “Draw, Talk, Act: One Writing Center's Exploration of Multimodality and Ethics.”

In addition to tutoring, CommLab offers an array of communication-related services to students and faculty including rehearsal rooms, topic workshops, copyediting assistance, and collaborative work spaces. Interested students and faculty members can visit CommLab’s website for more information and to request an appointment with a tutor.

CommLab and the School of History and Sociology are units of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.
