Biography

An economist by training, Hughes’ research focuses on the roles of technology, innovation, and incentives in the delivery and usage of health care services. He is particularly interested in the economics of diagnostic imaging.

His research has supported policy stakeholders including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, NASA, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Defense, state governments, and numerous private organizations.

Hughes is also director of the Health Economics and Analytics Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology, which uses data analytics to understand how evolving heath care delivery and payment models affect patients and providers.

He can comment on a broad range of stories in the area of health-care economics, including payment denial rates, malpractice reform, imaging utilization, price transparency, Medicare payment policies, bundled payments, accountable care organizations and advanced health care payment models.
