Performance is everywhere in a very broad range of human behaviors that includes the performing arts, and also sports, rituals, and everyday social interaction. Performance occurs in contexts defined historically, culturally, socially, and technologically. For instance, mobile phones and social media are current technologies that shape our experiences of both the performances we attend and the ways we perform our identities to one another.

Biography

Auslander is a groundbreaking scholar in the field of performance studies, having written two foundational books in the field Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture, which examines the influence of media technology on live performance, and Performing Glam Rock: Gender and Theatricality in Popular Music.

He can comment on stories involving contemporary and historical popular music, performance art, contemporary visual art, and cultural milestones focused on music and performance, such as the death of influential rock music icons.
